PORT HUENEME, Calif. — An active shooter incident was reported Tuesday morning at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), Port Hueneme, triggering an immediate lockdown of the military installation and a large-scale emergency response, according to official alerts sent to base personnel.
Base authorities confirmed the incident is occurring on the naval base itself, not at the adjacent civilian Port of Hueneme. Emergency notifications directed all personnel to immediately seek shelter in the nearest secure building and activate established lockdown procedures.
“Due to an act of violence situation, all personnel onboard Port Hueneme are directed to seek shelter in the nearest building and activate lockdown plans. Remain indoors until further instructions are received,” the alert stated. Officials emphasized that the situation is not a drill.
The Port Hueneme Navy Branch Medical Clinic was specifically mentioned in the emergency communication, signaling heightened concern in that area of the installation. Military security forces and law enforcement personnel responded and began securing facilities across the base.
Naval Base Ventura County is a major U.S. Navy installation on California’s Central Coast, supporting thousands of active-duty service members, civilian employees, and contractors. As a result of the incident, all normal base operations were effectively halted while authorities worked to address the threat.
Members of the public were urged to avoid the area entirely to allow emergency responders unobstructed access and to reduce the risk of additional harm. Traffic restrictions were expected around the base perimeter as the response continued.
As of Tuesday morning, officials had not released details regarding injuries, the identity or status of the suspect, or the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities described the situation as ongoing and fluid, with updates to be provided as more information becomes available.
This is a developing story.
